Reaction to "A Traffic Knot, Pulling Tighter"
Reaction to yesterday's Times piece about traffic at Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues:
Forest City Ratner: Gridlock of the Mouth
Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn says it's "difficult to keep a straight face" when Forest City Ratner claims:
| on one hand... | ...on the other |
"[Community Consulting Services's traffic predictions] overstated the vehicle trip increase by 40 percent to 50 percent, in part by failing to subtract trips generated by homes and businesses that would be replaced by the project." NY Times |
When it comes to displacement and eminent domain Bruce Ratner says: "about 100 people". When it comes to the proposed footprint Bruce Ratner says: "It's primarily train tracks" and Frank Gehry says, "First of all it's an empty site" DDDb |
Hmm... DDDb does have a point.
Should "not that much" displacement, be figured into the net increase of traffic, by subtracting a whopping 16,000-20,000 car drivers per weekday from Community Consulting's figure of 40,000?
The Times on traffic: a "nightmare" intersection or "not that bad when it's functioning"?
TimesRatnerReport analyses each point in the article, concluding that the Times "sketched the issue, ventilated some conflicting views, but still--partly a function of space--missed some important aspects of the issue, including the costs, the responsibilities of public agencies, and some innovative strategies."
